Dear Manual Therapy Practitioners.
Occupational hand injuries among manual therapy practitioners (physiotherapists, osteopaths, acupuncturists, chiropractors and massage therapists) are the focus of a review conducted by Gyer, Michael and Inklebarger. Gyer et al’s (2018) review objective was to scrutinise the current available literature to determine the risk factors, prevalence, preventive measures and consequences of hand injuries among manual therapy populations.
The lifetime prevalence of hand injuries was found to be 5%-30%, with the most prevalent injury occurring in the thumb. These thumb injuries accounted for 50% of total hand injuries. Performing manual therapy techniques, weak thumb muscles, and increase laxity in thumb joints were found to be some of the most significant risk factor for developing occupational related hand injuries.
My intention for sharing this information is to prolong, enhance and optimise YOUR occupational lifespan, improve YOUR quality of life/career and enhance YOUR occupational enjoyment.
Let’s START!
Much love
