Managing emotions is about knowing how and when to express them. Strong emotions, such as anger don’t usually allow for logical or strategic thinking. When you are angry, it might be difficult for you to focus your energy and attention in a productive manner and despite your best efforts you might be distracted, unable to concentrate. You need to release the tension first. However, shouting at family members, breaking things, and punching walls may not be wise. Rather try some stress managing techniques to conquer your anger. You can try doing some deep breathing exercises, screaming into a pillow, or writing your feelings down. Other good options include vigorous exercising or talking to someone you trust.

Emotions are misunderstood by many people as something that happens automatically, and that our feelings cannot be controlled. Therefore there is a common misconception that emotions just happen and that we are powerless over our feelings. The reality is that you can control your emotions, but it begins with controlling your thoughts. An emotion is caused by a thought, which can occur consciously or unconsciously. Once the thought has occurred, the emotion follows. If you are not careful with your thoughts you might be caught in a whirlpool of emotions, which can have detrimental effects because when you react emotionally you might not make the best decision or choose the best course of action.
